Προβολή/Projection: Libertarias

As initiative from the House of Women for Empowerment and Emancipation we are going to project the historical spanish film: "Libertarias". It is the first part in a series of projections that aim to accommodate for the need of a wide self-educational environment. We chose the movie to spark an open discussion on woman liberation and social revolution on the basis of our common knowledge of past feminist organisations and struggles against the repression of the hegemonic hetero-normative and patriarchal system.

"Libertarias" is a movie that focuses on how women self-organized during the Spanish civil war in 1936 within the revolutionary struggle. It follows the story of three women who took part in the uprising against Franco's regime from an anarcha-feminist perspective. Their radicalization, together with the other feminists to be, as an armed force within the Spanish anarchist movement could not have happened without the necessary preparation of the social ground by Mujeres Libres and Gruppo Cultural Feminino. Both these groups faced the cultural and financial subordination of women within the society and the anarchist movement and recognized it as perpetuating inequality. For them, a woman couldn't develop herself to the point of emancipation and become an activist/anarchist within the male dominated movement. It could only happen inside a separate organisation engaging them in a constant change of self, where consciousness was raised around the struggles against illiteracy, financial dependency and exploitation, unawareness around healthcare, childcare and sexuality. Based on their perspective, the anarchist revolutionary struggle should be wide and open to diversity and refer to the realities of the lives of all the opressed. This understanding was the prerequisite first step to engaging them in the revolutionary process. A formation like Mujeres Libres, although it has existed in particular context and time, remains very important for the organisation for women's empowerment.

Embros Theatre is an open, self-organised space that hosts numerous events and projects that fit in its philosophy. Amongst them, the House of Women and our weekly assemblies, as well as this projection. The theatre is accessible with wheelchair. It is a free-price event.
